an editor is like a catcher

This story changed my life. It’s the most I’ve ever reported and the best I’ve ever written.

My first Orlando Sentinel byline.

Last week, my news editor called me and asked if I knew anyone with a camera. Smartly, I replied that I had one. Five minutes later, I was hopping in the car with said camera and heading to campus, where one of our parking garages was closed due to a ‘suspicious package’ finding. I was essentially a breaking-news photographer, and I snapped a few pictures for the web. It was fun.

I’ve had a front-page headline not changed before, but it was for the Poughkeepsie Journal, not The Journal News (our paper), so I was excited to get this yesterday. (This as in ‘Losing ‘not an option’ for U.S.’) 

Today I edited the Yankee notes for the first time, and I got the NFL notebook for either the first time or the first time in a long time. It was fun. NFL went on the front of the Poughkeepsie Journal — unfortunately I won’t get a copy of that, but that didn’t change.

Coach seems cool — can’t wait to meet him in person!
